On Christmas Eve, 2008 my family went to mass while I stayed at home had a whiskey, listened to my friend Ryland Bouchard's music, and had a cry.
I was sickened to think of how churches everywhere were, in my temporary perception, were just saying there is a great afterlife for the pious even when they clear can't be sure. All the while my friends honest and harrowing music was bringing me closer to him and to our recent shared experience than any church like setting could for us two. I guess sometimes you feel like a cheerleader as a songwriter. Look at Kimya Dawson, she's a professional cheerleader for young girls worldwide. I'm not knocking what she does but that day, I didn't want to do that at all! so i grabbed my nephew's toy guitar and sang the beginning of this piece over and over.
On the recorded version I played a mandolin to replace the original toy guitar part. The haunting mid-section is cornered by Richard's uke-lin - an intersting antiquated ukelele and violin hybrid. Also featured here are extremely distorted drum-sets hard panned to sound like extra percussion. In an attempt to get the point across even more, we finally ask "Who needs a cheerleader?" once more with just our voices and a stand-up bass to give it groove. get it?
p.s. you could say I'm back to part time cheerleading again. It's just so fun... go Kimya!
lyrics
And if there's a place where it all ends, then why do they tell me it's where it begins? Who needs a cheerleader? Why am I a cheerleader?
If fate is a cave without an end, why put rocks in your mouth just to fashion a grin? If caves are a fate you'd rather skip, would put up your heart for the service of lip?
