about

This is a song about all the little miraculous happenings that are just outside our own experience. It's so easy to get distracted by the absurdly amazing stories surrounding us. When we see them we wish they were our own. I think what this song is saying is that we only get to make our own little story, which - of course - others may indeed be quite envious of. It often takes a whole lifetime to learn the technique to make something that can astound others.

lyrics

Every cell showed up an hour late for the meeting
And every park opened an hour late for the feeling
The point was made to a newborn brain cogitating
On a glass of juice and the time that it spent concentrating
The plaster's frame of the boldest dream looked like snowdrops
And the quietest skis built on bended knees felt like flip-flops
The plucking plonk of a heartfelt honk put the kids to bed at sea
The tea leaves, taut and tense, made a mockery of sense,
Never found their words to mince

When I am one, a spark in the sun, dodging murdering sands - I plan
When I am two, I'll live to love you hold two feet in my hands - I stand
When I am grown, I'll shape the unknown knowing all that I can - I can
What I am for, two feet on the floor, petals stretched like a fan, suntanned

The fledgeling fern made a dangerous turn to the sunrise
The moonrat ran with an architect's plan under noon skies
The half time tock of the canopy clock spins a web of secrecy that none can see
The folding fan of the permanent plan is a place to be the things you cannot be

When I am one, a spark in the sun, dodging murdering sands - I plan
When I am two, I'll live to love you hold two feet in my hands - I stand
When I am grown, I'll shape the unknown knowing all that I can - I can
What I am for, two feet on the floor, petals stretched like a fan, suntanned
