about

This is a cover of an old Jimmie Rodgers song "Prairie Lullabye." I had been going to sleep to Geoff and Maria Muldaur's version a few nights in a row before deciding to learn it. I learned it in a hotel bathroom in Medford, OR and realized there is only one verse. I then added another verse and chorus and an intro that I hope does justice to the original.

lyrics

shadows slowly creeping, down the prairie trail
everything is sleeping, ah but the nightengale
moon will soon be climbing, in the purple sky
night winds softly humming, this tender lullabye
cares of the day have fled, my little sleepyhead
stars are in the sky
time that your prayers were said, my little sleepyhead, to a prairie lullabye
saddle up your pony, the sandman's here to guide you down the trail of your dreams
tumble in bed, my tired, my little sleepyhead, to a prairie lullabye

embers become ashes, stumble towards the tent
snow from your eyelashes, melts when it falls on my skin
our howling hurdled hilltops, rests in wolves nightmares
our chilling bodies tremble, come closer if you care
all that you saw was said, my little sleepyhead, shades drawn o'er your eyes
without a word we're led into our sleepyheads, by a prairie lullabye
